Ole Miss, MSU qualify for NCAA Softball Championship field

Coming off its first SEC Tournament Championship in school history, No. 18 Ole Miss has earned the No. 12 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Championship and will host an NCAA Regional in Oxford beginning Friday.

The Rebels (40-18) are making their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance following last season’s runner-up finish in the Norman Regional.

Ole Miss welcomes Arizona State (30-20), North Carolina (38-19) and Southern Illinois (33-22) to the Ole Miss Softball Complex for the four-team, three-day event. The Sun Devils and Tar Heels kick things off Friday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN, before the Rebels take on the Salukis of Southern Illinois in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN3.

Friday’s winners will square off in the first of three games Saturday, while Friday’s losing teams will matchup in an elimination for game two of Saturday’s tripleheader. The loser of Saturday’s first game will take on the winner of the day’s second game in an elimination game later Saturday night. The winner of Saturday’s final game will take on the winner of the day’s first game on Sunday with an if necessary rematch scheduled for later that day.

For the fifth time in the last six years and the 13th time overall in school history, Mississippi State (36-20) is NCAA Tournament bound as the Bulldogs’ road to Oklahoma City begins in the Salt Lake City Regional.

MSU will open the double-elimination regional on Thursday, May 18 at 5:00 p.m. CT against the BYU Cougars (44-11) at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium. Along with MSU and BYU in the Salt Lake City Regional is host No. 11 Utah (33-14) and Fordham (45-15), who will square off at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday.
