Lady Wolverines fall in North State semis

East Webster’s softball team had its season come to a close early last week when the Lady Wolverines bowed out of the MHSAA Class 2A state playoffs.

Playing against an upstart East Union team, East Webster dropped the first game of its best-of-three, North State semifinal series with a 7-5 setback last Monday night at home.

At East Union on Tuesday, the Lady Wolverines rallied for a 3-1 win to force the if-necessary third game of the series — but fell 13-3 to see their season come to an end.

East Webster finished 17-7 on the year.

In the back-and-forth first game of the series last Monday, East Webster lost despite out-hitting East Union 12-10.

The game was tied 2-2 and 4-4, and East Webster was up 5-4 after five innings. But East Union scored twice in the top of the sixth and did not trail again.

Jennah Pate was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI and Mari-Todd Brown belted a pair of doubles and had two RBIs and a run scored to lead East Webster.

Jessica Aron had a single and a double and Jessica Davis also had two hits. Coy Jennings doubled and drove in one and Emily Nason also doubled, while Janey Aron singled and scored.

Liz Massey was the losing pitcher, giving up four earned runs and striking out three in five innings. Davis threw two innings in the circle and struck out four, allowing two unearned runs.

In Tuesday’s Game 2, East Webster trailed 1-0 before scoring three times in the top of the seventh to force another game.

Pate had two hits, a run and an RBI, Josie Reed was 2-for-3 with a run and Nason was also 2-for-3 for the Lady Wolverines.

Jessica Aron singled and scored, while Brown had the team’s other hit.

Massey was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five.

In the third-and-decisive contest of the series, East Union snapped a 1-1 tie with six runs in the bottom of the second and East Webster eventually fell by the 10-run rule.

Jessica Aron doubled, tripled and scored and Janey Aron was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead East Webster’s eight-hit attack.

Brown doubled, scored and drove in one, Jennings doubled and drove in one, Jessi Reed doubled and Nason singled.

Massey started and took the pitching loss before giving way to Davis.
