Eupora, East Webster tennis standouts head to state

Defending Class 1A-2A state champion Tupelo Christian eliminated both Eupora and East Webster in consecutive weeks in the MHSAA state tournament for teams.

After Eupora fell 7-0 to TCPS in second-round playoff action the previous week, East Webster dropped a 5-2 decision to Tupelo last Tuesday in the North State finals.

But, the season is not over for 14 tennis standouts from Eupora and East Webster who will be competing this week in nine events in the MHSAA Class 1A-2A individual state tournament.

Weather permitting, action was to begin Monday in Oxford and will conclude either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

In boys’ singles, East Webster’s Jacob Wofford earned a No. 3 seed and was to take on Justin Peterson of Leland in the Round of 16. Richard Hernandez of Eupora was to battle Corey Jones of Pisgah in the same round.

In girls’ singles, East Webster’s Melony Berryhill was to face Baldwyn’s Merideth Morris in the Round of 16, while Eupora’s Madison Hester was to take on Paige Oster of Pisgah.

East Webster’s boys’ doubles team of John Carpenter and Rhett Parker earned the No. 1 seed and were to face off against Brantley Brister and Tucker Hoegins of Loyd Star in their first state-tourney match.

In girls’ doubles, Eupora’s Lillie Burton and Wesleigh Cummings were to face off against Pisgah’s Courtney Buffington and Madison Crapps; while East Webster’s JonHayden Hancock and Mary Mae Turner were set to face Shelby Doiron and Caleigh Hankins of Madison St. Joseph.

In mixed doubles, East Webster’s duo of Charlie Brand and Claire Ferguson were scheduled to face French Camp Academy’s Rachel Gray and Jason May; while Eupora’s Jaime Hernandez and Kaelyn Mitchell were set to square off against Hannah Hopson and Jack Posey of Sacred Heart.
