Eupora native Jones becomes a NY Jet

From Press & Staff Reports

The New York Jets selected Eupora native Derrick Jones in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

The former Ole Miss cornerback was taken with the 20th pick of the round, just six picks after former teammate D.J. Jones (no relation). He was the 204th overall selection.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Derrick Jones played in 44 games at Ole Miss with eight starts. He saw action as a receiver, defensive back and special teamer throughout his four-year career, landing on the defensive side for most of his senior year, when he started three games.

Jones was second on the team with five passes defended and two interceptions this past season, returning one for a touchdown against Georgia. He recorded career totals of 54 tackles, two interceptions, 11 catches, 175 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.

Jones flashed his athleticism with a strong showing at Ole Miss’ pro day earlier this month. He ran a sub-4.5 40-yard dash while recording a vertical jump of 41 inches and a broad jump of 11-0.

Jones finished his career with 54 tackles, half of them coming as a freshman.

Saturday’s announcement was made on the NFL Draft stage in front of the Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) Museum of Art.
