From School Reports
In November, The Pride of Eupora competed in the Mississippi Bandmasters Association/MHSAA Championship Marching Competition.
Performing its 2015 program, titled “The Reckoning,” the band was awarded the 2015 Silver Medalist for Class 2A. The band placed third in Drum Line, second in General Effect, and Music, and first in Marching Visual.
In December, the band presented its annual Christmas Concert benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Along with the junior high and high school bands, the junior high chorus also performed. Thanks to the generosity of those in attendance, approximately $700 was raised in order to benefit the research hospital.
Band Director Chad Hawkins, the band members and band parents extend a big thank you to the community for its support of this annual event that benefits a great cause.
During spring break, The Pride of Eupora traveled to Orlando, Florida, where members had the pleasure of marching down iconic Main Street U. S. A. past Cinderella’s castle, playing songs and cadences that captured the spirit of Americana.
The students were not only able to experience marching down Main Street this year, but also participated in a studio workshop with one of the Disney conductors at EPCOT.
Offered as part of a program through Disney Performing Arts, the band members experienced a once-in-a-lifetime educational and mentoring program designed to inspire them to dream big and discover a world of possibilities that will help them prepare for their future. These tailored workshops allowed the students to immerse themselves in Disney movie magic, rehearsing the scores of classic films in the “You’re Instrumental” workshop.
This three-day visit to Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney World was not only an opportunity to enjoy many of the attractions, but also a time for the members to bond as a band family.
In addition, the marching bands from Belmont, Grenada and Hatley high school also performed at Magic Kingdom during the week of spring break. Schools are selected from applicants across the nation that submit audition tapes reviewed by world-class adjudicators, who evaluate and select schools for the opportunity to participate in a Disney Performing Arts program.
Students are taken on stage and behind the scenes, where Disney theme parks become vibrant “classrooms” as they discover new techniques and pursue their passions, all while making memories that last a lifetime.
State concert evaluations were held in Tupelo on April 6. The band performed three selections and was evaluated in the area of Sight Reading. This year the band rated Superior. Having received Superior ratings from every judge in marching, concert and sight reading,
The Pride of Eupora now garners the Sweepstakes Award. It is the only band in the state of Mississippi for Class 2A to hold this award for the 2015-16 season. Congratulations to the band and its director, Chad Hawkins, for a great season.
