Fire destroys house in Walthall

From Staff Reports

A family lost everything in a fire that destroyed their house last week in Walthall.

The fire at 20 County Home Road was reported about 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Chief Casey Henderson of the Walthall Fire Department said it started as a brush fire that spread to an adjoining attachment (used for storage) of the single-story wood-frame house, climbed the back wall, and caught the shingles and roof on fire.

The house, located on the northeast side of the courthouse at County Home Road and Carroll Street, was destroyed. The family of Brian and Jennifer Tehan, and her son, Brandon Denning, lost everything inside.

Brian Tehan, who reported the fire, was the only person there and was not injured, according to Henderson. Eupora and Mathiston fire departments assisted Walthall FD, where Tehan is a captain.

Crews were at the scene about eight hours Thursday and seven hours Friday to make sure the fire didn’t spread because of dry conditions, the house’s age and its all-wood construction, the fire chief said.

Anyone wanting to help the family, which was renting the house from John Charles Stewart, may contact Henderson.
