Helen Bowen and Bowen’s Dairy Bar … a part of the history and memories of ’50s and ’60s Eupora teenagers!
Eupora High School’s Class of 1965 had its 50th reunion July 10 and 11, and the theme was a recreation of Bowen’s Dairy Bar and the Owl.
From 1950 to 1967 Helen Bowen was in charge of the Dairy Bar and the teenagers that hung out there, therefore, the reunion would not be complete without recognizing her. At the 50th-year event Helen was crowned Ms. Dairy Bar 1965.
In April 1950, Cecil and Helen were married, and on Oct. 21 of that year “Bowen’s Dairy Bar” opened its doors. The building was for processing milk but the small front space was the Dairy Bar.
It was where Helen, 19 years old, had the job of working behind the counter while Cecil worked in the back and delivered milk. Her first items served were dipped ice cream specialties, and she gradually added milkshakes, fries and those great burgers.
It was a hangout.
A teen hangout.
It was always “the place to go,” the place to go to talk to friends after the game. Hanging out at Bowen’s was as much of a rite of passage for teenagers in the ’50s and ’60s as braces and Clearasil.
Memories … Helen Bowen, part of heartfelt memories for the Class of 1965.
