Maben Farmers’ Market
Skies were bright and the breeze was mild Saturday morning as the vendors and the customers gathered at the Maben Farmers’ Market for another day of shopping and visiting.
A new vendor from Ackerman, John O’Kelly, came with fresh tomatoes, eggplant, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, peas, butterbeans, snap beans and sweet and field corn.
He was immediately surrounded by customers who grabbed up his produce pretty fast and he was almost completely sold out by mid-morning. He will be back this week with much more product to sell.
Greg’s Produce Barn was there with a full array of fresh vegetables and fruit. They brought cantaloupe, watermelon, plums and Chilton County peaches. They also had red and green tomatoes, green beans, sweet corn, Vidalia onions, yellow squash and banana peppers. Truman Fisher shows up early every week to get the best pick of what he wants to purchase. He usually stays for a little visit.
Many shoppers were enjoying the morning outing and making it an occasion for leisurely meeting and greeting with neighbors and friends.
Next door to Greg’s was the spot chosen by Dolly Hollingsworth of Maben to display her hand-crafted beaded necklaces and bracelets with matching earrings. Dolly also displayed tote bags she has made.
Across the way Vanessa Fulgham of Mathiston set up her table loaded with fried pork skins in lots of flavors. Next to her was Rubie Harris of Maben, who brought lots of fried pies: chocolate, cherry, apple, peach and sweet potato. She also brought individual pecan pies, and a variety of jams and jellies.
Myrna Crittenden of Eupora was there again with bagged popcorn, canned jams, jellies, relishes and spiced apples. She also brought a good supply of colloidal silver, which is a general treatment for lots of bacterial or viral-based conditions.
Come to the Maben Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning this summer on the lot next door to the post office beginning at 7:30, and staying set up until 10 a.m. For more information about being a vendor call 263-8458.
