Fresh off a two-game sweep of Hollandale-Simmons in the first round, the Eagles of Eupora High School looked to stay alive in the MHSAA Class 2A State Baseball Playoffs when they take on Strayhorn in a best-of-three series in the second round beginning on Thursday.
After visiting Strayhorn on Thursday, the Eagles were set to play at home on Friday at 6 p.m.. The third and deciding game — if needed — would be at Strayhorn on Saturday.
EHS earned its spot in the second round with convincing 19-2 and 14-3 wins over Hollandale-Simmons last week.
Eupora exploded for 12 runs in the third inning in the Thursday contest on the way to the 19-2 victory. Nine different Eagles had at least one hit in the contest, while Trey Pittman, Claude Herard, Lamarcus Caradine and Corson Gunn had two singles each. Rusty Johnson slapped a double for the winners, while Will Bowen, Taylor White, Jalan Embry and Kenny Murrell picked up a single each.
Gunn had three RBIs for the winners, with Pittman, Embry, and Herard driving in two each. Johnson earned the win on the mound, striking out seven hitters and not allowing a hit in three innings of work. Gunn struck out four in two innings of relief.
Eupora scored 10 runs in the top of the fourth to break open a 4-3 contest in the series-clinching win over Simmons on Friday.
Pittman, Johnson, and Lawson Stewart had a double and single each for the winners, while Gunn had two singles and Herard, Joshua Rollins and Caradine had one single each. Stewart drove in three runs for the winners, while Johnson, Pittman, Gunn and Caradine had two RBIs each.
Pittman picked up the win on the mound for Eupora, while striking out three and allowing just three hits and no walks.
