Three Eupora netters qualify for state tourney

A trio of Eupora High School tennis standouts will be taking part in the MHSAA Class 2A Individual State Tennis Tournament on April 1 and April 2 at Parham Bridges in Jackson.
Earlier this month freshman Madison Hester qualified for event in girls singles, while Ty Gibson and Anna Brooke Pittman will compete in the mixed doubles event.
The Eagles of EHS advanced to the second round of the MSHAA Class 2A State Team Tournament before falling to Union 4-3 in the second round last week. EHS took a 7-0 win over Leland in its first-round match.
In the boys No. 1 doubles match, Beau Smith and Parker Blaylock of Eupora took a 6-2, 6-2 win. Hester won her girls singles match 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Brooke Payne, while the mixed doubles team of Gibson and Pittman won their mixed doubles match 6-3, 7-6 over Ryan Moore and Hannah Payne.
Union’s No. 1 girls doubles team of Katie Collins and Muriel Collins defeated Eupora’s Kaelyn Mitchell and Madeline Mixon 6-1, 6-2. The UHS No. 2 girls doubles team of Alex Wilcher and Anna Claire Norman downed Lily Pittman and Taylor South of EHS 6-2, 7-6.
The No. 2 boys doubles match saw Kole Henry and Jacob Pender of Union take a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cameron Townsend and Campbell Vaughan. Union won the decisive boys singles match by forfeit.
“The improvements we have made from the beginning to the end of the year have been incredible,” said EHS tennis coach Thad Walker. “The match against Union was the best we have played all year.”
