Maben Lions Club
Lion Duane Thomas was recognized Feb. 25 for 55 years of service as a member of the Lions Club, the largest service organization in the world. Lions Club International awarded him the 55-year Chevron and it was presented to him by Shawn Nygard, president of the Maben Lions Club.
Lion Duane first joined the Lions Club of Belzoni on Sept. 1, 1958. He moved to Maben in June of 1973 and immediately moved his membership to the Maben Lions Club. He was employed by the bank in Maben and eventually became president of the Maben branch of National Bank of Commerce, N.A. (now Cadence Bank).
He served many years as secretary-treasurer of the Maben Lions Club and was especially interested in the light bulb sales project to raise money for the many service projects of the club. Another project that he was very active in was the Maben Lions High School Football Bowl that brought area teams to Maben to play each other before the post-season playoff games changed the system in the early 2000s.
Lion Duane has always been interested in sponsoring new members to the club. He has brought in 24 new members over the years, and continues to be active in searching for quality individuals to sponsor. Last meeting he brought a potential new member to visit the club. To demonstrate his interest in strengthening the club he wore his Sponsor Pin, which was presented to him when he reached the 20-new member sponsor level.
