Act on what you hear and apply it to life

Beloved, what does it profit for a man to just hear the word of God but never put it into action. Or, what does it profit for a man to go to church Sunday after Sunday but never change his lifestyle.

James tells us in Chapter 1:22 that we must be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” In other words, true hearing is much more than just listening. See, once you have received the word of God you then must put it into action.

Now after hearing we must step out on faith and actually apply what we have heard. James knew that once we step out on faith that’s when the test will come. That’s when trials come, that’s when tribulations come, that’s when the enemy will put doubt in your mind.

But, James in this chapter is trying to teach us that faith in God will cause us to obey his word. That’s why he said in verse 2 of this chapter “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials.”

Beloved, even when we go through trials and tribulations in life we should always show the characteristics of Christ. See, just as our biological child will have our DNA, we as born-again believers should have the DNA of our Heavenly Father. Knowing this, we will learn that our actions through faith will produce patience and maturity during this Christian walk.

James 1:23 tells us that “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.”

In other words it’s easy to know what you look like when you are not tested but it’s in the test when we know the true characteristics of faith.

James gives us three of the characteristics of faith: (1) Quick to hear. This means that we must be ready to accept what God’s word is saying. We as his disciples should be so in tune with him that we do what he asks just because he is God.

(2) Slow to speak: This means that we don’t question what he says. Remember, God didn’t ask us to see it, He asked us to believe it. “Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me (John 20:29) .”

(3) Slow to wrath: Finally, once you have made a commitment to God, and you stand firm in that commitment, some may challenge your stand but you must remain strong. Why? “Because greater is he that is within you than he that is in the world.” So be not only a hearer of God’s word, but be also a doer of the of God’s word.
