Lady Eagles split pair in Winona Classic

The Eupora High School fast-pitch softball team opened the season last Saturday by winning one game and losing another in the Winona Classic.

The Lady Eagles banged out 26 hits inthe opener to take a 30-1 win over Charleston, before dropping a 6-4 decision to host Winona in the nightcap.

JaLisa Bell ripped a homer and four singles, while driving in six runs and scoring five to lead the EHS attack against Charleston. Hannah McDowell, Courtney Hatcher and Khylar Cain each had a double and two singles for the winners, while Kaitlin Burton, Marlee Ray and Emily Littlejohn had three singles apiece.

Delta Newman had two hits and scored five runs for Eupora, while Kylie Richardson also had a hit. Littlejohn drove in five runs, while Hatcher and Cain had four RBIs each and Burton scored five runs. Sydney Bailey was the winning pitcher for Eupora.

Eupora fell behind Winona 3-0 in the nightcap, before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Winona responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.

Newman, Hatcher and Bell all doubled for Eupora in the game, while McDowell and Littlejohn each had a single. Newman knocked in a pair of runs, while Hatcher and McDowell had one RBI each.

Newman took the loss on the mound for EHS, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.

The Lady Eagles are set to host Choctaw County on Thursday, before taking part in the East Webster Fast-Pitch Tournament on Saturday. Eupora is set to face Houston at 10 a.m. and Vardaman at 11:30.
