Volunteers, MFC contain Mantee fire

From Staff Reports

Volunteer firefighters and forestry personnel kept a fire that burned a shop on Highway 15 South in Mantee last week from spreading to another building and neighboring houses.

The Mantee Volunteer Fire Department and Mississippi Forestry Commission were dispatched about 1 p.m., Jan. 20 with the Mathiston and Woodland fire departments providing additional water. They had the fire under control about 2:20 p.m. The cause is unknown but Mantee Fire Chief David Brand said the suspected burning of leaves was a contributing factor.

“We were able to get on scene quickly and protect the fire from spreading to the house and another building on the property as well as neighboring houses,” Brand said.

The fire burned across a pasture and Mantee VFD personnel, with the help of the Forestry Commission, were able to contain the fire before it crossed Pine Bluff Road to Mantee Road, he said.

These additional fires occurred Jan. 20-Sunday, according to Webster County 911 Center reports:

• Jan. 20 at 12:51 p.m.: structure fire at Lucius and Firetower roads; Clarkson and Mathiston VFDs and the MFC responded. A woods fire on Carver Road was also reported the same day at 3:14 p.m. The Bellefontaine VFD and MFC responded.

• Friday at 1:03 p.m.: grass fire on Carroll Street in Walthall; Walthall VFD responded.

• Sunday at 10:12 a.m.: grass fire on Chandler Road.
