The Maben Public Library kicked off the year with the reading of “The Gingerbread Baby” and the creation of a gingerbread house complete with edible decorations and a stuffed gingerbread baby during Story Hour on Jan. 10.

Ms. Mary read the story about Matti making a gingerbread boy but as she did not leave the boy in long enough he came out a baby. The rest of the story was about chasing the baby around the kitchen and around the countryside.

Finally after everyone gave up and trudged home they found that Matti had made a gingerbread house. Guess who was living inside? “The Gingerbread Baby.”

Then the fun began — the making of the gingerbread house. It took three grown women and two kids to hold up the walls, put on the roof, and finally decorate the top, sides, walls and the door. Of course, Winters Norman liked the gumdrops but Will Harper Norman like the icing best.

Finally, they all trooped out with books and DVDs plus a sucker. It was a good day at the library after a winter break.
