Turnovers proved costly for the Lady Wolverines of East Webster High School on Saturday as Columbus used heavy ball pressure to take a 54-50 overtime win in the Immanuel Christian School Classic.
East Webster held a 17-6 lead early in the second quarter, but Columbus outscored the 9-2 Lady Wolverines 16-10 in the fourth quarter an 4-0 in the three-minute overtime period to take the win.
“I’m sure we had 24 or 25 turnovers and a lot of them led to easy buckets,” said EW head coach Todd Hutchinson. “It’s the same thing we have had trouble with all year.”
Quantesha Patterson pumped in 30 points to lead the Lady Wolverines, while Mamie Hollenhead score 11. Later in the day the East Webster girls junior varsity took a 29-19 win over the Immanuel Christian varsity.
The East Webster boys ran into a buzz saw in their game on Saturday, dropping an 80-57 decision to host Immanuel.
“They just shot lights out,” said East Webster boys coach Corey Stidham. “It seems like they shot 70 percent or better from outside. We were able to get it down to about eight points in the fourth quarter, but we had four players foul out and it was just too much to overcome.
“Every time we would make a little run they would make a big shot,” he said. “It was just one of those days.”
Next up for East Webster is a home matchup with Choctaw County on Friday, followed by the boys taking part in the New Hope Classic on Saturday.
