From Press Reports
The “Pride of Eupora” Marching Band traveled to the campus of Pearl High School in Pearl on Nov. 2 to compete in the Mississippi Bandmasters Association/Mississippi High School Activities Association Championship Marching Competition for Class 2A.
The band performed its 2013 program, “Virtuoso.” Music selections included “Chopsticks, “Heart and Soul,” “Piano Sonata No. 16,” “Fur Elise,” “Pine Top’s Boogie” and “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.”
The band competed against Clarkdale, Enterprise, Lake, Richton and Union high schools in preliminary competition that afternoon. Bands were judged in five different areas — color guard, percussion, music, visual and general effect. The top three bands advanced to compete for the state title.
“Pride of Eupora,” as well as Enterprise and Union high schools, advanced to the finals. After the final performance, the band relaxed and waited for Classes 4A and 5A to conclude their final performances. Judges’ scores were tabulated and awards were then announced. The band placed second in color guard, percussion, music and general effect. Third place was earned in visual.
The “Pride of Eupora” outscored Enterprise High School to capture the second-place title. Union placed first overall for the fifth consecutive year.
Band members thanked their parents, the community, faculty, staff and band alumni (“you know who you are”) for all of their support in making this a successful 2013 marching season. A special thanks was extended to EHS Principal Laci Knight and Lyn Blaylock for making the road trip and supporting the band on their day off. Chad Hawkins is band director.
