The Lady Wolverines of East Webster High School won a hard-fought best-of-three series with Enterprise on Tuesday, earning a spot in the MHSAA Class 2A State Slow-Pitch Softball Championship Series.
East Webster, the South State champions, will take on North State winners Baldwyn in a best-of-three series on Saturday. The first game is set for 10:30 a.m. at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland, with the second game being scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. A third game, if needed, will be played later in the afternoon at the same field.
East Webster earned its spot in the finals by taking a 6-5 win over visiting Enterprise in the third and deciding game on Tuesday. The Lady Wolverines had won the first game 8-6, only to drop the second contest 3-2.
The final game on Tuesday was decided in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kerrigan Clark led off with a single, followed by a hit from Madison Flemings. Kendall Wilkinson then ripped a line drive single that got past the right-center fielder to give the Lady Wolverines the win.
East Webster advanced to the series against Enterprise by knocking off West Lincoln 9-0 and 12-2 on Saturday.
The Lady Wolverines won the 2013 MHSAA Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Championship last spring.
“It is just something you work towards,” EW head coach Lee Berryhill said of reaching the title series. “It is the goal that everybody has. You have just have to work hard and get better each day and the girls did that.”
