The East Webster softball team is just one win away from becoming region champions. The Lady Wolverines can pick up that win today (Thursday) when they travel to Eupora to take on their county rivals.
EW is currently 2-0 in league play with one of those wins being a thrilling come-from-behind win over Eupora last Thursday.
“Eupora is playing really well,” said East Webster head coach Lee Berryhill. “It was a good match-up between two good teams.”
Eupora held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Jennah Pate unleashed a three-run homer to spark a seven-run inning as the Lady Wolverines rallied for the 10-6 win.
“We just started hitting the ball well and capitalized on a couple of opportunities,” Berryhill said. Autumn Frost also homered in the game for the winners.
Mamie Hollenhead ripped two of East Webster’s five homers in the Lady Wolverines 18-5 region win at Calhoun City on Monday. Frost, Kerrigan Clark and Bailie Springfield also homered for the winners in the game.
“It’s all about momentum,” Berryhill said. “Some days we do (hit the ball well) and some days we don’t. It’s hard to know from day-to-day what you are going to do. It’s all about being consistent. That’s the biggest thing.”
East Webster will be hosting its own tournament in Cumberland on Saturday with nine teams participating. The first game is set for 9 a.m., while the last is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The Lady Wolverines are slated to take on Wheeler at 12:45 p.m. and New Hope at 7 p.m.
