Underclassmen will be counted on to lead Lady Wolverines

East Webster softball coach Lee Berryhill will have to change his philosophy a little headed into the 2013 slow-pitch season that officially kicks off Saturday.

“I always say you are only as good as your seniors, but we don’t have any,” Berryhill said of his Lady Wolverines. “So we are going to have to really depend on our juniors and sophomores for leadership. They all have experience so they should be able to step up and get the job done.”

While Berryhill says last spring’s MHSAA Class 2A Fast-Pitch State Championship should give the slow-pitch team a little momentum, he says the two games are totally different.

“There is not as much strategy in slow-pitch,” he said. “It is all about hitting and defense. We will be missing two big bats out of our line-up, but we should be pretty solid.”

The Lady Wolverines lost two seniors of last year’s team, had two to move and then lost junior slugger Autumn Frost to a hand injury over the summer. Berryhill said it’s not certain whether Frost will be able to play any slow-pitch at all this season, but expected her to be ready for fast-pitch in the fall.

The Lady Wolverines open the 2013 season at the Eupora Classic on Saturday. They are slated to face Winona at 9 a.m. and Grenada at 10:15. After that the Lady Wolverines visit Noxapater on Tuesday and host Nanih Waiya on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Kendall Wilkinson will handle the pitching for EWHS, while Jessie Reed is behind the plate. Geneva White is at first, with Bailie Springfield at second, Mamie Holinshed at short and Kerrigan Clark at third.

The outfield has Madison Flemings in left, Kandler Flora in left-center, Jennah Pate in right center and Krista Ellis in right.

The Lady Wolverines will be competing in Region 5-2A along with Eupora and Calhoun City.
