2 injured in Bellefontaine crash

A single-car automobile accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Highway 9 near Bellefontaine Grocery remains under investigation.

The accident was reported about 3:25 p.m., with the Bellefontaine and Walthall fire departments dispatched to the scene.

Walthall Engine 6 and Rescue 6 responded, and found that a car with two people inside had hit two trees. Walthall’s Jaws of Life was used to remove the roof and doors to safely get to the patients and remove them from the vehicle.

Medical helicopters were unable to fly because of inclement weather and the patients were transported to hospitals by ambulances, with at least one reported to have been taken directly to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. The conditions of the injured were not available as of publication.

NMMC-Eupora Emergency Medical Services and Calhoun Health Services ambulances responded, along with units from the Webster County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol.

An accident occurred around the same time on U.S. 82 in Mathiston, according to emergency radio reports. Details were not immediately available.
