Construction of a PE/multipurpose building is under way on the north side of Eupora High School.
The building was added to the Webster County School District’s Qualified School Construction Bonds projects last fall. It will be used for high school athletic purposes, including basketball practice. According to School Board records, the building will have four junior high/high school dressing rooms and two coaches’ offices.
Original plans were for the building to be located on the south end of the main parking lot at EHS, across from the old gymnasium. However, Superintendent of Education Jack Treloar said the district did not have the money for excavation work needed to dig up the old city swimming pool located under the parking lot in that spot.
He also said the QSCB funds have to be exhausted by the end of December and that the PE building needs to be close to the existing school buildings. It is being built where the old houses for coaches were once located that were demolished a few years ago. R&R Construction of Winona is the contractor.
The school district is seeking permission from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to tear down the old gym at EHS because of its deterioration.
The Permit Committee of the MDAH board of trustees ran a public notice in the June 27 issue of the Progress-Times stating that the gym is under consideration for removal of “Mississippi Landmark” designation. The committee invited public comment on the proposed removal of Landmark designation within 14 days of the notice’s publication.
