Mad Dawgs compete in Dizzy Dean World Series

The Mathiston Mad Dawgs competed in the 2013 Dizzy Dean World Series at Snowden Grove Park in Southaven.

The team advanced to the World Series after placing second in the 8-year-old Dizzy Dean South State Tournament.

Taking to the field in a round-robin format on July 18 in Southaven, the Mad Dawgs fell 17-11 to the Walker County (Ala.) Hitmen. On Friday, Mathiston lost to the Northwest St. Pete (Fla.) Allstars 20-2 and defeated the Kennesaw (Ga.) Generals 19-6.

Advancing to the championship bracket of the 8-year-old division, Mathiston played two games Saturday. The Alpharetta (Ga.) Raiders won the first game 17-2 while Mathiston topped the Caledonia Allstars 31-23 later in the day.

The Mad Dawgs played their final game in the series Sunday in a rematch with the Alpharetta Raiders, which won 21-7. Mathiston was among 43 teams competing in its division and reached the top 24.

“I think we did good,” coach Ken Norwood said. “I’m proud of them for going as far as they did.”

The members of the Mad Dawgs are Judd Azlin, Eli Bigham, Mason Brand, Ethan Chesser, Hayes Fason, Logan Johnson, Briceton Johnson, Cade Morrow, Carson Norwood, John Preston Springer and Ethan Williams. Assisting Norwood were coaches Darrell Fason, Field Johnson and Bill Morrow.
