‘Mater Man’

Robert Lee Yates, right, of Eupora shows off the enormous tomato plants in his garden on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Some of the plants are more than 7 feet high or taller. The plants have grown so tall that they have tipped over and made vines that won’t allow Yates to walk in-between the rows. These plants are reaping enormous tomatoes, with more growing by the day. Yates has been a longtime farmer, but states he has never had tomato plants grow to this size. Besides the tomatoes, he also has a row of blue collard greens and a row of snap beans. With Yates is his great-grandson, Justin Brantley. STAFF PHOTOS/DANIEL BRUNTY
