DSU student CD includes Justin Boatman

From Press Reports

Eupora resident Justin Boatman, a sophomore music industry studies major at Delta State University, was among a select group of student artists/songwriters chosen to be included on the “Fighting Okra: Round 2” CD project on the Fighting Okra Records student label at DSU.

Justin recorded his original song, “You Deserve Better Than Me,” performing all vocals and accompaniment. Justin, son of David and Lorrie Boatman, is a 2012 graduate of Eupora High School and is a member of the Delta State Marching Band and Wind Ensemble.

Justin’s original work was showcased at Fighting Okra Record’s exclusive release party in late spring in Studio A of the Delta Music Institute at Delta State University.

Fighting Okra Records is a student-run record label at Delta State University whose purpose is to provide a practical, real world music industry experience to the students. Its mission is to provide a variety of independent artists with professional quality music industry services in an effort to expose their name in recordings to the broadest possible audience.

It has been two years since the DMI had released a project to campus and the community, so the Fighting Okra Records student staff decided to assemble a second compilation CD to expose the depth of talent of DMI students. “Fighting Okra: Round 2” contains 14 original songs and one cover song representing a wide range of genres including gospel, alternative, R&B, hip-hop, dub step, rock and country.

The songs on the project were written, produced, engineered or performed by current DMI students and alumni. Songs on the CD were selected after multiple screenings by the entire F.O.R. staff, and were selected on the basis of lyrical content and recording quality.

DMI Director Tricia Walker has served as the faculty adviser for the young label during their second year. “The lessons the students learn in working on this real-world project are invaluable. I’m proud of what they’ve put together on this CD.”

Copies of “Fighting Okra: Round 2” are available in the main office of the DMI in the Whitfield Building on the campus of Delta State University while supplies last and online at most major online music retailers.
