More information has been released in regards to the two-car accident that caused a fatality on Clarkson Road in the White Hill community on July 1.
The accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. near White Hill Baptist Church a couple of hundred yards south of Montevista Road. The Webster County Sheriff’s Department, which initially responded, identified the drivers as Hannah Smith and Arnita “Nita” Fields of Eupora.
From the investigation of the accident, the WCSD said Smith’s vehicle, which was traveling southbound, apparently swerved into the opposite lane of the roadway, striking the front of the vehicle being driven by Fields. The two vehicles had a head-on collision, causing Fields’ vehicle to leave the roadway and overturn in the embankment.
Fields, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene. The WCSD said two passengers in her vehicle suffered minor to major injuries in the accident; their names were not available at the time of a statement issued Monday by the sheriff’s office. The Sheriff’s Department said a report was still pending from Coroner Steve Wells as to the official cause of Fields’ death.
Rescue workers remained on the scene almost three hours to completely clear the debris and vehicles from the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. Rescue workers from Walthall, Eupora and Clarkson fire protection districts responded.
“At this time the Sheriff’s Department can find no illegal activities in the wreck; it appears to just be a tragic accident,” the release said.
Sheriff Tim Mitchell stated that this was a horrible accident and sent his regards to all the families involved. Mitchell also said he was proud of the response and dedication of the Webster County rescue workers who assisted at the accident scene.
