Mayor Dan Burchfield and Eupora Board of Aldermen members were sworn into office Monday afternoon at the Community Center.
Aldermen taking the oath of office were Jerry Gary, at-large; Junior Shaw, Ward 1; Howard Rumore, Ward 2; Hugh Gibson, Ward 3; and Robert Gibbs, Ward 4. All are new to their positions, however, Burchfield served 16 years as an alderman and Gibson is the former board attorney.
“We can’t make any promises except to do the very best job we can for the city of Eupora,” Burchfield said in brief remarks to those present. The new administration, he said, needs to keep the motto that was inscribed on the cake served during the reception that followed: “Moving Forward.”
Burchfield said the three priorities of the board will be jobs creation, upgrading the city’s water system and finding the money to repave streets.
The new mayor and all five aldermen plan to attend the Mississippi Municipal League Annual Conference July 15-17 in Biloxi. This will be the first time that all of the city’s elected leaders together will attend the conference, which includes training and education sessions.
The Board of Aldermen had its first meeting Monday night, one that lasted five hours.
Senior Circuit Judge Joey Loper swore in the mayor and board members. Of note, he was sworn in 24 years earlier to the day as then-mayor of Ackerman.
