Children ‘Dig into Reading’

By Fran Smith

Branch Librarian

If you drove past the Webster County Public Library in Eupora on June 4 at 1 p.m., you would have seen an 85-pound tortoise walking through the grass.

He was visiting the library with Keith Wood from Animal Tales. After traveling in a big black box, the tortoise needed to get some fresh air and exercise. At 1:30 Keith and Rocky came into the library to share with an audience of 33 children and some parents the habitats of five animals, where they live, what they eat and how they get their food.

In addition to Rocky, the tortoise, Mr. Wood brought a hawk, a bat, a python called a woma from Australia, and an armadillo from Hungary.

After the 45-minute “Dig into Reading” presentation, each child was given the opportunity to touch the snake and tortoise. Everyone was presented with a bag containing a pencil, bookmark, reading log and snack.
