Savon Daughtery of Eupora High School lifted a combined weight of
1,355 pounds to win his second consecutive individual state
championship at the MHSAA Class 2A State Powerlifting Championships
held in Jackson earlier this month.
Daughtery took the overall championship in the 198-pound class,
defending the state title he won in 2012. Daughtery squatted 525
pounds, benched 315 and dead lifted 515 pounds to take the win.
“They competed extremely well,” EHS coach Chad White said of the
seven lifters who represented the Eagles in the event. “They take a
lot of pride in what they are doing. During the year our kids picked
each other up and they just keep on working hard. They have been a
great group of young men and we are just really proud of them.”
Vandy Smith took second place in the 242 pound class by squatting
540, benching 325, and dead lifting 535 for a total of 1,400 pounds.
Three Eagles took third place in their respective weight classes.
Timothy Austin had a total of 680 pounds in the 114-pound class,
while Javoris Draine totaled 1,200 pounds in the 165-pound class and
Tamoris Draine lifted 1,240 pounds in the 198-pound class.
Rusty Johnson also competed in the 148-pound class for the Eagles,
lifting 835 pounds, while Patrick Marshall competed in the 220-pound
class and had a total of 1,170 pounds.
