After a tough stretch of games against strong competition in Florida
over spring break, the Eupora baseball team returned home on Monday
and celebrated with its first win of the season.
The Eagles used strong pitching from Rusty Johnson and Brett Chapman
to post a 6-0 shutout win over the visiting Weir Lions. Trey Pittman,
Johnson and Jalen Embry all had strong days at the plate for Eupora
in the win.
Eupora’s road game against Leake County was cancelled and instead the
1-7 Eagles will host Leake County in a district doubleheader Thursday
beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Eupora travels to Calhoun City on Saturday to take on the host team
at 11 a.m. and then face Water Valley at 1 p.m.
The trip to Florida was a tough one baseball-wise for Eupora, as the
Eagles lost to Pine Forest 10-0, West Florida 15-0 and Gulf Breeze 7-0.
“It’s not that we are necessarily doing things wrong, we are just not
doing the right things at the right time,” said EHS head coach Brad
Mitchell. “In Florida we really didn’t get any hits until we already
had two outs or were behind. We can’t be aggressive on the bases like
we want to do when we are in situations like that.”
