The annual Christmas Concert benefiting, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was labeled a success despite band director Chad Hawkins’ illness.
On Dec. 13, Hawkins notified Principal Laci Knight that he was ill and would not be able to perform his duties of conducting the Christmas Concert later that evening. Susan Thompson, bookkeeper for the high school, without hesitation, volunteered her son’s services. Mrs. Thompson placed the call to her son and he agreed to help his alma mater out.
Lane Thompson is the band director for J.Z. George High School in Carroll County, as well as, a former band student of Hawkins. Mr. Thompson arrived on campus, reviewed the program music and quickly rehearsed with the junior high and high school band members. Without the cooperation of our band students, Thompson’s task of conducting on such short notice would not have been as successful.
The bands performed before a large crowd in Latham Auditorium, raising approximately $700 to benefit the research hospital. Mr. Hawkins, the band members and band parents extend a big thank you to Mr. Thompson for conducting the concert and to the community for its support of this annual event which benefits a great cause.
