The “Pride of Eupora” Marching Band traveled to the campus of Hinds Community College in Raymond on Saturday to compete in the MHSAA Class 2A State Marching Band Championship.

Band members performed their 2012 program “On a Dark and Stormy Night.” Music selections included “Lil’ Red Riding Hood,” the theme from “Beetlejuice,” “Lacrimosa” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

The band competed against Union, Wesson, Enterprise and Calhoun City high schools in preliminary competition Saturday afternoon. Bands were judged in five different areas – color guard, percussion, music, visual and general effect. The top four bands advanced to compete for the state title.

After the final performance, the band anxiously awaited final results in the bitter cold. Judges’ scores were tabulated and awards were announced. The band placed third in color guard, visual and general effect.

Second placed was earned in percussion and music. The “Pride of Eupora” edged out Enterprise and Wesson High Schools to capture second place overall. Union placed first overall for the fourth consecutive year.

“The band would like to thank their parents, the community, faculty and staff for all of their support in making this a successful 2012 marching season,” a representative stated. “A special thanks is extended to (Principal) Laci Knight and Lyn Blaylock for braving the cold with us!” Chad Hawkins is band director.
