The East Webster Wolverines gained another district win last Friday night.
The Wolverines defeated the Williams-Sullivan Yellowjackets in a homecoming matchup, 47-6.
Sophomore Deangelo Liggins continued to lead East Webster at the running back position, while freshman Jack Wilson retained his spot from the previous week as quarterback.
Senior Austin Mcginnis put the Wolverines on the board in the first quarter with a big defensive play. Mcginnis caught an interception in Yellowjacket territory and ran 35-yards for the touchdown. Freshman kicker Tyler Cosby added the extra point, and East Webster had a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Liggins capitalized on another scoring opportunity later in the first quarter with an eight yard run to the end zone. The East Webster offense fired up in the second quarter with three more scoring plays.
Wilson capped a Wolverine drive with a one-yard run while Liggins made a 25-yard dash to the end zone. Before halftime, Cosby added three points with a 35-yard field. The Wolverines had a 31-0 lead over Williams-Sullivan.
The Yellowjackets managed to enter the end zone once during the game in the third quarter. The East Webster defense overpowered Williams- Sullivan for the rest of the night silencing their attempts for another scoring play. The Wolverines scored in the third quarter when Wilson found John Wofford Williams with a three-yard pass.
Freshman Marshan Clark added another touchdown later in the fourth quarter with a one-yard run. After the PAT by Cosby, the Wolverines had a 45-6 lead.
The final points for the Wolverines came from a safety late in the game when the Yellowjackets fumbled a snap. Cosby had an exceptional night going 6-6 on extra points and added a total of nine points.
Liggins led the rushing attack with 17 carries for 157 yards with two touchdowns. Wilson followed with 21 carries for 77 yards with one touchdown. Clark had 10 carries for 34 yards with one touchdown while Draper Nason had nine carries for 34 yards.
Wilson was 2-2 through the air for 16 yards with one touchdown.
Chase Keller had one reception for 14 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Codie Mckee led with six stops. Thomas Brooks had five stops and a fumble recovery, while Williams had four stops.
Senior Nick Reynolds had a fumble recovery.
The Wolverines hold 7-2 overall record and are 2-1 in district play.
“We had good homecoming, and the kids played hard,” said East Webster head coach Doug Wilson.
The Wolverines will travel to Hamilton this Friday to take on the Lions in another Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 showdown before returning home to face county rival the Eupora Eagles. Playoff action will follow.
“We look forward to going to Hamilton,” said Wilson. “We’re taking it one week at a time and we’re focusing on Hamilton this week.”
The Lions will enter the game with a 4-5 overall record and a 2-1 record in division games.
Hamilton recently defeated J.Z. George, 27-6.
The Wolverines, Lions and Ackerman Indians are each battling to claim the second spot in their division.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
