Quick Bites Dr. Jeff Wilson, area Extension horticulturist, will present the Quick Bites program “Growing Beautiful Landscape Plants” from noon-1 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Webster County Extension Office.

Summer is almost over and fall planting season is coming up. Wilson will discuss how to plan for, purchase, select the best location, install and maintain beautiful landscape plants.

FRG meeting The Family Readiness Group of the National Guard’s 289th Vertical Construction Company will meet at the National Guard armory in Bruce at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss fundraising ideas for the unit’s soldiers. “If you need items to purchase or sell, come see us.” For more information, contact FRG Director Carol Knight at 315-2434 after 5 p.m.

Cub Scouts car- wash/bake sale Cub Scouts Pack 30 will have a carwash/bake sale Sept. 29. The fundraiser starts at 8 a.m. at SuperValu.

FM 108 Day 2013 FM 108 Day will be Sept. 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the campus of French Camp Academy. The day will feature fun, food, fellowship, door prize and a silent auction. Singing starts at 9 a.m. featuring local performers. For vendor information, contact Glen Barlow at 547-7254.

VA Mobile Health Clinic The G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Medical Center will set up a mobile health clinic in Ackerman at 9 a.m. Sept. 29 at the National Guard armory.

The armory is located at 9540 MS Highway 12 E. Services that will be available will be eligibility determination, registration, enrollment in MyHealtheVet, physical exams, patient education, Vet Center information, benefits information, cemetery information and female veterans’ information. Veterans must bring their DD214, VA card or military ID. Choctaw County flea market The Buy USA/Choctaw County committee is looking for local artists, crafters, growers and home businesses to begin a flea market in Choctaw County.

Sonya Griffin Peterson benefit A fundraiser for Sonya Griffin Peterson will be Sept. 29 at Sherwood Community Center (Hwy. 15 North) in Choctaw County.

Peterson is fighting breast cancer. She is the granddaughter of Kenneth and Emma Lou Nickels and Herbert and Ann Griffin.

Food will be sold starting at 5:30 p.m. and a womanless beauty pageant will be at 6:30 p.m.

Little Miss, Mr. Clay Co. Pageant The Little Miss and Mr. Clay County Pageant in honor of the late Doug and Petty Childs (his father) will be at 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at the West Point Civic Center. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the winner of the 16-18 age group. Doug Childs was from Maben.

The pageant is open to boys and girls through age 18; they do not have to be residents of Clay County. Registration packets may be picked up at the Clay County chancery clerk’s office, Pheba One Stop, Cannon’s Corner or Sun Beauty. Registration forms and the $40 entry fee are due Oct. 1. Forms can be emailed to entrants by emailing Sara Jo Jones at gofigure30@netzero.com.

USDA Outreach Meeting Oct. 2 The Webster County USDA Office, Winston County Self-Help Cooperative and other local groups will sponsor a USDA Outreach Meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Eupora Community Center, 150 N. Dunn. The meeting is for small farmers, landowners and concerned citizens. It will focus on services offered through Farm Service Agency (farm loans to purchase farms and equipment), Natural Resources Conservation Service (cost-share assistance with fence and grasses) and Rural Development (housing loans and grants).

Anyone concerned about their children and grandchildren’s future should attend this historic meeting to make a difference in Webster County.

Retired Education Personnel meet The Retired Education Personnel of Oktibbeha, Webster and Choctaw Counties will meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Mathiston Public Library.

Johnnie Sue Cooper Wijewardane, PhD, RN, FNP, will bring a program on healthcare.

Retirement reception to honor hospital employee North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora employee Shirley Griffin will be honored with a retirement reception on Oct. 3 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the hospital dining room. Griffin will be recognized for her 42 years of service to the hospital and the public is invited to attend.

Mid-South Forestry Equipment Show The Mid-South Forestry Equipment Show will be Oct. 5-6 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day at the Mississippi State University John W. Starr Memorial Forest.

EHS Homecoming Parade Oct. 5 The Eupora High School Homecoming Parade will be Oct. 5. The parade will include the EHS band, cheerleaders, football team and Homecoming maids.

The parade will start at 5 p.m. in front of the gym, proceed east down Fox Avenue to Dunn Street, turn south on Dunn Street to Highway 182, turn east on Highway 182 to Highway 9, turn north on Highway 9 to Fred’s corner, turn west on Clark Avenue and end in front of the old high school.

Benefit for Joyce Pittman A drawing is scheduled for an H&R .35 Whelen Handi-Rifle with a 3x9x40 Nikon scope to benefit Joyce Pittman. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Voter registration deadline Oct. 6 Deborah Hood Neal, circuit clerk for Webster County, announces that the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election is Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. to noon.
