Area shooting victim refuses to cooperate with authorities

From Press, Staff Reports

The victim of a shooting in the western portion of Oktibbeha County is not cooperating with authorities in their investigation, according to published reports.

The shooting, which occurred on Pierce Road near Sturgis-Maben and Self Creek roads, was reported to Oktibbeha 911 at 11:40 p.m. Sept. 18. When deputies with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene, they discovered a woman with gunshot wounds to the body, The Commercial Dispatch reported last week. The shooting occurred in the middle of the road and the shooter was no longer on the scene.

The victim was then transported via ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora before being airlifted to North Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Tupelo.

She underwent surgery and was recovering in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit as of Friday, when OCSD Cmdr. Brett Watson told the Starkville Daily News she was in stable condition.

A person of interest turned himself in by calling the OCSD, according to a Sept. 20 SDN article. Watson, in an article published Saturday, told the newspaper the person was in custody but that no formal charges had been issued in relation to the shooting. Watson would not release the subject’s name and the victim was not identified either.

Watson said the victim was not cooperating with authorities but that the OCSD was continuing its investigation through other means.

“We’re not saying there won’t be any charges filed but there are none at his point,” he said.
