The Webster County School Board has awarded a contract to an architectural firm for the construction of a gym at East Webster High School’s campus in Cumberland.

Superintendent of Education Jack Treloar presented a contract from Leland Gray Architects for the EWHS gymnasium construction project on Sept. 4. A new gym will be built during the second phase of construction at the tornado-devastated campus. The board voted unanimously to approve the contract, minutes reflect.

In a related Consent Agenda item, the board approved a manual payment of $78,800 to the firm for architectural work on the project.

Phase One Phase one construction, which is under way, involves refurbishing the L-shaped north wing of the old school, constructing a new academic building and paving the existing drive on the east side of the campus.

Board members handled business concerning phase one construction during a special meeting on Aug. 22, which project architect Gary Bailey and EWHS Principal Bill Brand attended.

Bailey, according to those minutes, discussed/recommended approval of a payment of $385,238.50 to Panola Construction Co., contractor for the current construction. The board approved the recommendation.

16th Section Hunting Leases Treloar announced Sept. 4 that no bids were received for a hunting and fishing lease on Section 16, Township 21, Range 10. After some discussion, according to the minutes, the board voted to grant the superintendent permission to readvertise to take bids on hunting and fishing leases on the parcel, and to advertise to take bids on any other 16th sections available for hunting and fishing leases.

Sealed bids are being accepted until 11 a.m. Oct. 2 on four tracts and the board will consider them that night, according to a public notice being published in the Progress-Times. Each lease is for three years and a minimum bid of $5 an acre has been established.
