75 Years Ago: Sept. 3, 1937 Interesting Item from Sand Hill The Webster Progress is always glad to publish the comings and goings, the spendings of nights, news of picnics, watermelon cuttings, broken legs, teeth having been pulled and weather conditions of rural communities of this and adjoining counties.
Any number of newspapers published in Mississippi does not have correspondents at places like Punkin Hollow, Shady Bush, Burney Cross Roads and Jones Mill. But the editor of The Webster Progress believes that such items are interesting however, than the following news bit which our good Sand Hill correspondent wedged in between a “spending the night” and “made a business trip last week.”
“Mr. W.W. Doss had one hill of watermelons to come up at his sorghum mill this spring and grew wild. From that one hill, he pulled 14 watermelons weighing from 30 to 40 pounds each.” It is doubtful that any farmer of this county can show anything in the way of watermelon growing to beat that record.
