MABEN — “School days, school days, dear old golden rule day, reading, ’riting, and ‘rithmetic, taught to the tune of a hickory stick.”
There was a time when school started in September and the red spider lilies bloomed at the same time; but today school starts in August. Hot, stifling weather muggy with humidity, and enclosed school buses transport kids back to school.
This month the Maben Public Library has a School Day Decoration display, donated for viewing by Sandra Bishop, a retired schoolteacher.
The decorations are the typical school-day decorations: apples, school bells, miniature school desks, globes, pencil holders and school buses. The curio cabinet is filled with old school books dating back to 1897 up to 1930.
The public is encouraged to drop by and view the newest display and perhaps check out a book, an audiobook, some DVDs or a magazine.
