75 Years Ago: Aug. 12, 1937 Boats Placed on the Legion Lake Seventeen light cypress boats, each 16 feet long, were placed last week on the American Legion Lake just north of Walthall. These boats were bought at a government auction sale by the Hon. Lake Hays, Memphis attorney, and native of Walthall. He gave them without charge to the local post.
Legionnaire Ernest Elkin and “Son” Justice brought them from Memphis last week and Elkin is busy re-caulking them for immediate service. The Hon. Lake Hays owns a stock farm near Walthall where he was born. He was formerly a vice-commander of the American Legion Post No. 1, Memphis, said to be the largest in the world. Mr. Hays’ interest in Webster County and in the Legion prompted his generous gift which is appreciated by all. He and his family have been invited to attend the Legion picnic to be held at the lake on Thursday afternoon.
