Sales tax collections climb locally

The city of Eupora’s sales tax collections for May increased 2.4 percent over May 2011.

Overall sales tax collections totaled $36,301, according to the most recent data from the Mississippi Department of Revenue. This is up about $856 from the $35,445 collected in May 2011.

Eupora generated $445,085 in sales tax returns through May for the fiscal year that began in July 2011. That’s a 7.1 percent increase from the $415,380 recorded at this time last year.

Mathiston posted May collections of $16,492, down $682 from the same month in 2011, or about 4 percent.

However, the town’s fiscal year-to-date collections are up about 6 percent, from $186,410 at this point last year to $197,384 so far this year.
