GLC-Eupora remembers veterans

From GLC-Eupora

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and honored soldiers who had died during the Civil War?

The first widespread observance of Decoration Day was held on May 30, 1868. Over the years, the day became an occasion to remember the dead in all American wars and came to be known as Memorial Day. In 1972, the traditional date of May 30 was changed to the last Monday in May. This is a day to remember soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This year’s Memorial Day was May 28.

Each Memorial Day, please take a brief moment of silence and remember all those whose lives have been lost in pursuing our nation’s freedom. Then, take time to remember some of the patriotic songs such as “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Special thanks to VFW Post 3806 and Ladies Auxiliary for sharing their time, effort, love and concern by volunteering monthly to lead a bingo game and assist with the monthly birthday party. Each veteran at GLC-Eupora was recognized with the gift of a flag from the VFW on May 23.
