WOCHS students enjoy field day

MABEN — Which is more exciting: Field Trip or Field Day? According to the students at West Oktibbeha County High School, a field day is more fun.

On May 22, Principal Leonardo Thompson and his staff oversaw the first field day held for the students’ enjoyment before the school year drew to an end and all exams were over.

Thompson, teachers and students were all assembled on L.M. Hamberlin Field and were enjoying an exciting game of kickball.

The game was between the junior high and the high school children. It was obvious that many skilled athletes were on the field running, jumping, catching, yelling and having a grand old time. It was a beautiful breezy but sunny day for a day outdoors.

The morning had been filled with playing kickball, wheelbarrow race, 50-yard dash, track and field events, flag football, baseball throw and the football throw. After lunch, the students were to move into the gym to play volleyball, dodge ball and basketball (5 on 5). To participate, the students signed up for whatever they wanted to play. If one wanted to sit a game out, so be it.

To keep some sense of order, coaches Adam Lowrey, Barabas Leasy and Danny Crawford assisted Thompson in calling fair catch, foul, outs and who’s next. Oh, the golden days of our youth!

Finally, the game was over and the high school students were declared the winners. Oh, well, there is always next year.
