WCSD warns of Jamaican scam

Local officials are warning people to be wary of calls from Jamaica’s 876 telephone code to avoid being swindled out of their money.

Many citizens in Webster County have reported receiving calls from someone claiming they have won $5 million and a new Mercedes-Benz, according to a release issued last week by the Webster County Sheriff’s Department.

However, the caller instructs the “winner” to first obtain a prepaid debit card to cover the “tax” and “insurance fee.” This amount ranges from $400 to $700.

The scammer then tells potential victims that he is close to Eupora — “just a town away” — and will meet them in the next few minutes to present them with their check.

The numbers that will appear on one’s Caller ID are 876-416-5105, 876-391-2343, 876-478-9032 or 876-561-0249. Area code 876 is located in Jamaica.

“The Sheriff’s Department wants you to keep in mind that if you haven’t entered into any contest or sweepstakes, then there is no way you can win,” it warned. “Also, you should never have to “pay money to receive free money.”

The WCSD said it could do nothing to get one’s money back if it is sent to these scammers.
