East Webster Diamond Wolverines go undefeated in district play

CUMBERLAND-East Webster Baseball clinched the district and earned them a first round bye in the state tournament with a 3-2 win against rival Eupora this past Monday, April 16th. It was also senior night and honored for their participation to the program were seniors Connor Burton, Ty Hendrix, Dylan Henley, Codie Silver and Brennan Sparks. The game went into extra innings tied at two. In the bottom of the eighth with a man on third and facing a 0-2 pitch, eighth grader John Wofford Williams pulled a fast ball out to right field and scored Tyler Doss for the walk off win. It was his forth at bat for the night and he RBIed all three East Webster runs. “It felt great” said an excited Williams “He threw me a fast ball and I pulled it to right” “I’m so glad I was able to contribute and help send these seniors out winners.” With the win East Webster improved to 17-6 overall and 8-0 in Class 2A, Region 5, District 4. They also won their eighth straight game and will carry that streak into the first round of the state playoffs, where they will host Wesson- Thursday, April 26. Lady Wolves Beat Bruce, Move On To Quarterfinals Then girl’s softball took the best out of three series from Bruce to advance to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. They defeated Bruce 11-5 at East Webster on Friday April, 20th. It was senior night and recognized for their contributions to the program were seniors Chloe Roberson, Montana Spencer and Michaela White. Bruce scored first with a run in the first and then added another in the third to go up 2-0. East Webster then rallied in the bottom of the third to score 5 runs and go up 5-2. The Lady Wolverines then scored three more in the forth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Lady Trojans could only manage three more runs in the top of the fifth. Autumn Frost led East Webster with a double, a triple and drove in two runs. Bailey Williams also had two doubles, a single and four RBI’s. Mamie Hollenhead had three hits and one RBI. Montana Spencer and Kendall Wilkinson each had a hit. East Webster traveled to Bruce for a double header Saturday April 21st. Bruce won 19-14 in the first game of the doubleheader. “I went through three pitchers in that game.” said Wolverine Head Coach Meleah Brown “It was very frustrating.” “We gave them twenty- two base runners, on fsixteen walks and six errors.” “I was proud of my batters though.” “We pretty much earned all fourteen of ours.” East Webster won the second game of the double header 8-4. “I got some great pitching in that third game out of Celia Pate” said Coach Brown “I was pleased that we were able to comeback and recover from game two” East Webster now advances to the quarterfinals of the state tournament where they will host Strayhorn winner of district four, on Thursday, April 26. They will then travel to play a doubleheader (if necessary) at Strayhorn Saturday, April 28th. East Webster Netters Sweep 2A District Tournament East Webster played seven different individual events in the district tournament at Itawamba Community College Thursday, April 19th. All twelve Wolverine players won first place in all seven individual events and will advance to the state tournament in Jackson May 7th & 8th. The winners and their events were Alex Vaughn -Boys Singles, Hayden Hill – Girls Singles, Clayton Hudspeth/Matthew Gordon – Boys Doubles # 1 Samuel Butler/John Taylor Champion – Boys Doubles # 2, Abbie Vaughn/Mikka Davis – Girls Doubles # 1, Holly Ellis/Taylor Davis – Girls Doubles # 2, Wesley Champion/Molly Davis – Mixed Doubles. East Webster hosted Pisgah in the first round of the state team tournament. They blanked the Dragons 7-0 to advance to round two of the state tournament. They will host Madison St. Joe Tuesday, April 24 at The East Webster Tennis Complex here in Cumberland. “I’m just so proud of all our players” said Head Coach Pam Champion “We will definitely face our toughest test this year with Madison St. Joe.” “They have been winning state as far back as I can remember.”
