75 Years Ago: April 22, 1937 Famous G-Man Returns Home Hugh Clegg, assistant to J. Edgar Hoover of the Department of Justice and major in the Intelligence Department of the U.S. Army, spoke to a large and enthusiastic audience at the Mathiston Public School on Friday. Mr. Clegg is a native of Mathiston, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Clegg. He graduated from Mathiston Public School and Bennett Academy. In his speech, he said that he owed his success to his father and mother, his early training and the friends who had expressed faith in him and encouraged him when the way seemed too difficult. He told of the part that science is playing in the detection of criminals and gave many interesting psychological situations showing the cunning of many of the criminals of today, and also how the Bureau worked in out-witting them. A crusade against crime, he called it, and there are more than 3 million of these enemies of society to be dealt with, he said. He deplored the pardoning of so many criminals, as they are so often a public menace, and are an expense to the state. Crime does not pay, Mr. Clegg says, and he urged the youth of the land to look with contempt upon those taking that path. The large audience was entertained and enlightened by the brilliant speaker.
