Maben plans to continue Farmers’ Market

By Terry Harpole For The WPT

The Maben Chamber of Commerce met April 2 for its regular meeting. Shawn Nigard presided over the meeting, during which members discussed the chamber banquet held Feb. 25.. They thanked the people and businesses in the area for making the banquet a success. Also at the meeting, the chamber began the planning stages to begin the Maben Farmers’ Market for another year. Last year, some of the ladies in the area met with representatives from the Appalachian Regional Commission and secured a grant to start the first Maben Farmers’ Market in August. This year, as no grant money will be available for the Farmers’ Market, the Maben Chamber of Commerce will once again be sponsoring it. One major change in the market this year will be a charge of $5 per space for people to sell their goods. A drawing for cash money will be still be held each week. People may also bring goods to sell that were not home-raised. Any farmers or anyone who wants to bring in locally raised vegetables or fruits may do so. The farmers’ market will begin May 5 (a Saturday) at 7 a.m. and be open until 10 a.m., and will continue until September. For more information, call 263-8327 or 263-8458.
