Sales tax collections up

Mathiston saw a 12.16 percent increase in its sales tax collections in January. The town’s sales tax collections were up $1,677 from January 2011 to $15,465 this January, according to Mississippi Department of Revenue data. Its fiscal year-to-date collections are up 6.75 percent or $8,165 from the same period the previous year. The city of Eupora reported sales tax collections of $32,710 in January, compared to $30,804 in collections for the same month a year earlier, up 6.18 percent. Sales tax collections are up 8.64 percent or $23,727 since the state’s fiscal year began July 1. The state’s sales tax collections have a three-month cycle. Tax is collected by the retailer one month; it is reported and paid to the MDR the second month; and the diversion is paid to the cities by the state the third month. These figures reflect other area taxes collected on January sales with 2011 figures in parentheses: • Maben: $6,929 ($5,882) • Mantee: $2,096 ($2,248) • Walthall: $2,057 ($1,920)
