Cumberland-These teams opened District 2A Region 3 play here Tuesday, March 20. With baseball, fast pitch softball and tennis all starting at the same time on this beautiful evening, The East Webster Lady Wolverines and The Ackerman Lady Indians gave it all they had, but one team had to leave with the win. East Webster won this one 5-2. Even if you were here to watch another sport you couldn’t help but sneak over and catch these girls going at it! Even during the pre-game warm-ups these girls were practicing so hard that East Webster starting pitcher Bailey Williams suffered a minor injury when a line drive hit Williams in her pitching hand. With her pitching hand swollen Williams still pitched all seven innings giving up only two runs, one earned on four hits. She also struck out six Ackerman Lady Indians and walked four. East Webster started it, scoring one run in the bottom of the first when Autumn Frost doubled. Then, Bailey Williams got the RBI when she hit a ball to the left field fence scoring Frost. Neither team scored in the second. Ackerman got their first two batters, Bridgette Robinson and Karina Brown, on first and second in the top of the third. Dayna Presley then came up to bat for Ackerman and hit a ball to the outfield that was thrown home to Lady Wolverine catcher Autumn Frost who threw to third and got Robinson out. Ackerman still had runners at first and second. Allison Cooper for Ackerman stepped up and nailed one through the short stop that was thrown home for a play at the plate that was declared safe. Catcher Autumn Frost for East Webster then threw to second to try and get Presley, but she also slid to safety. Brown was then able to score for Ackerman. Williams got the next two batters for Ackerman swinging, stranding two Ackerman Lady Indians. East Webster then came back and tied the game at two runs in the bottom of the third. Autumn Frost hit the ball over the left fielders head that was a stand up double. On a pass ball to the next batter, Bailey Williams, Frost was able to advance to third. Wiiliams was then walked on a 3 to 2 pitch. Mamie Hollenhead then batted to second base for the sacrifice that scored Frost. Ackerman pitcher, Emily Robison got the next two East Webster batters out to end the inning and leave two stranded for East Webster. In the bottom of the forth with the game tied 2-2 the bats did what they needed to for East Webster. Kendall Wilkinson got a hit to lead off for the Lady Wolverines. Montana Spencer and Chloe Roberson each had sacrifice bunts to move Wilkinson to third. Frost then hit a ball that if the wind were blowing out, would have sailed out of the park. Instead it was an RBI double. Williams followed with a RBI single and Mamie Hollenhead brought her home with a ball that was hit just over the Ackerman center fielder’s glove. Ackerman head coach Mike Brown then brought in a seventh grader to pitch, Makenzie Toombs, to get the Lady Indians out of the inning. She for Ackerman and Bailey Williams for East Webster continued to stifle the remaining batters for both teams as East Webster came away with this one. Ackerman fell to 4-4 (0-1). East Webster moved up to 6-4 overall and (1-0) in the district.
